Re: Storm Dylan?
Tractors and cars should be doubly OK because they are insulated from the ground by rubber tyres A lightning strike is typically around 3,000,000 volts per metre. A rubber tire is not even going to slow it down. Agreed, but the downward negative stroke is attracted to upward earthed positive stroke...

Re: Storm Dylan?
If you are in an enclosed vehicle of any kind (like a tractor with an enclosed cab), stay in it. If it gets hit by lightning, the lightning will stay on the exterior of the vehicle, and you will be safe. On the other hand, if you are in an open vehicle, such as an unenclosed tractor, a convertible w...

Re: Storm Dylan?
Thanks. It was a doozy, but no damage at our place. We didn't even lose electricity. I guess the generator did its job. ;)Green Aura wrote:Best of luck, KL, keep safe.

Re: Storm Dylan?
You folks name winter storms? Cool! We have a bad one headed our way, due to hit later today. The central pressure is lower than that of many hurricanes, and the winds will be of hurricane strength. It won't be fun. The road over the mountain is already dodgy from previous storms; this one is going ...

Re: Someone say something
It's not very ish-y, though I suppose DIY counts as ish-ier than getting someone in to do the work. Here is me running a rented excavator to make a trench for underground power to our barn.

Re: Someone say something
The wind has brought my greenhouse down, so that's what I should be doing today. It's still quite windy, though - and I've just not got the up-and-go... :( All my little plants will be squashed, anyway. Oh, no, Ina! That is a nasty setback. Will it be a big job to rebuild it? Do you have plants in ...

Re: Someone say something
I updated my avatar. :) We're not doing much with the garden this year. We have strawberries ripening, and the raspberries are doing okay. The asparagus has been neglected for a few years, and we shouldn't have picked any last year, so it's looking pretty sickly this year. Neither of us has the dedi...

Re: Someone say something
We are still waiting for spring here, even though today is suposedly the first day of it. At least we didn't have to shovel after last night's non-storm. I planted daffodil bulbs along the driveway last fall. I really want the snow to melt so they can start growing. We are going to re-plant strawber...

Re: Dangerous weather
Not even tempted to plant anything here. We had 40 cm of snow yesterday, up to 1 metre in drifts. I spent all day with the snowblower and shovel digging out.

Re: Wooden Pallets
Wood treatments that will preserve the wood are generally poisons. I would only use untreated wood in a veggie garden. Yes, it will eventually rot. I'd rather have the wood rot than my body.

Re: Greenhouse!!!
Congratulations on the new greenhouse! I wanna see pics!
I can't imagine why a greenhouse wouldn't be considered agricultural. Growing veggies is kinda the definition of agricultural, isn't it?
