Re: Doom. Doooom, we're all doomed

if it wasn't for the fact that a small minority own the vast majority of the land, every family could have 3 acres of agricultural land each. This would be sufficient to provide most of your food and heating, and you would still be able to do 4 days a week working elsewhere. This is a good statisti...

Re: Doom. Doooom, we're all doomed

Imagine that cities do fail, where does that mass group of people go to get food? If they come knocking on your front door, hungry, angry thet you have and they dont, and quite prepared to take from you and you family, do you defend yourstockpile then or happily give it away? That's why survivalism...

Re: Doom. Doooom, we're all doomed

I think more people are becoming aware that the road our society is on is heading for a train wreck. This awareness is probably a good thing, if it can motivate people to make significant lifestyle changes. 1. Has eviromental/population/resources based doom gone mainstream? It might be starting to. ...

Re: Starting small

Did that link for the LED lights in Canada work for you ? Yes, it did, thanks. Being able to order them is nice, but what I discovered that is even more interesting is that WalMart ( :evil2: ) has them. Not that I am a big fan of WalMart, but it appears to be the first retail store that carries LED...

Re: Starting small

I always get these things mixed up. If you discharge it deeply in that you use 80% of it's power the battery will generally only last a 100 charges etc. Where as if you discharge the battery by 20% in that leaving 80% of it's power in the battery it will recharge 1000's of times. That's what I thou...

Re: Starting small

if you run the batteries down to 20% of their capacity they will only last about 100 charges ( estimate IIRC) where as if you only discharge them to 20% of their capacity then they will recharge thousands of times Something not quite right about the percentages, methinks. It depends on th...

Good guess. :) Funny, I was sure I entered my location when I joined. Well, it's there now. Thanks for pointing that out.

Re: energy saving

I wish it were easier to get LED light bulbs here. They are just about impossible to find. We use mostly CFLs, but I am not impressed with their longevity - better than incandescent, but they still burn out fairly often. And then there is the fact that you have to dispose of them as toxic waste. LED...

Also had a beautiful harvest moon, so a very red/orange sky Not strictly true I'm afraid, the Harvest Moon is not for another 2 months, then followed by Hunter's Moon. Sorry just going by what the old guy standing in the field taking photos of it said it was, so what does a harvest moon look like s...

Re: Rainwater collection

Update... Yesterday, I finished digging the trench and made the final connection to the third tank. I gave it its first test as soon as it was connected. It fills at about 8-10 gallons per minute by gravity from the upper tanks, which is all I need. When full, it will feed by gravity to the garden, ...

Re: self sufficiency an expensive hobby #2 ,or what do you do

We are not nearly as self-sufficient as we want to be. We are starting to grow our own veggies. We did pretty well this season, and plan to expand the garden next year. We are vegan, which reduces our environmental footprint and makes food self-sufficiency more practical. We buy locally when we can....

Come to think of it, if you had a title page with just "A girl and her dibber" and a picture of one, you might get way more traffic than you bargained for!

Re: anybody know anything about lettings?

Turning off the water will stop the leak, but it means you have no water. That's a problem. I can't advice you on landlord-tenant law, especially since I don't live in the same country as you, but in any reasonable jurisdiction, you could call a plumber and send the bill on to the landlord. A plumbi...
