the future of food

i've just watched a bbc documentary called "a farm for the future" it's on you tube, and you should watch it if you can. I'm in trouble with Mrs Gert because I had to wake her up to tell her about it, as it really got to me. I am now going to research permaculture as i've had my epiphany :mrg...

Re: Too young to process?

I would like to add to the post even though Mrs Gert beat me to it  As a boy my Grandfather, a gentle softly spoken man who I adored, kept rabbits in his garden and every so often we would have rabbit for tea. I grew up understanding that athough he cared for his animals as if they were pets, a...

Re: goats

Hi sortanormalish, sounds like the same as Defra, but we don't have the freedom you do. Every sheep, goat, cow, pig and llama has to be completely traceable. It has to be tagged at birth and then every time it is moved anywhere that is off your holding you have to fill in forms stating where it is g...

Re: goats

Hi Crump, you need to get a Holding Number, basically you need to register that you are keeping goats. It's a relatively painless procedure. It's been a while since i did this, but i think you just need to phone the Rural payments agency and register with them 0845 603 7777 . They will give you a ho...

Re: Ish Wiltshire Meet?

Sounds good, we could give you a lift if you like snapdragon, and meet the others in the north of Wiltshire Somewhere. I don't know that area very well so can't really offer any suggestions.

Re: Another 'chickens wont lay' plea

Hi Sarahkeast can i ask you a few questions? are they in a sunny area? what has the weather been like recently ? is there any chance that they are laying but the eggs are being predated by magpies, rats etc? It does seem very strange that you are getting so few eggs. If you can give us more of a pic...

Re: chickens for laying

Hi if you just want egg machines and are not bothered about fancy colours etc, I would stick with the ISA Brown , sometimes known as the Warren. They are bred just to produce eggs, but are also friendly little brown hens. They are the breed that you would get if you collected battery hens. So either...
