Re: Brexit
My friend gave me two bags of wool-based compost for my birthday last year - very nice stuff.

There are more and more shops that let you refill your own containers. Just rather difficult for somebody like me without a car - can't constantly carry lots of empty jars etc around! Calls for a lot more planning. And at the moment I can't get to the shop where I usually buy my coffee, and where I ...

I suppose so - might do that if and when I get the time. At the moment, far too many more important things... Like tidying up the kitchen, and the rest of the house, and the garden... And anyway, if and when I do get around to tidying up, I might even find the original!

I'm a dab hand at skirts - not sure OH has the legs for one though (or me for that matter) I used to make comfortable trousers of the elastic waist variety myself... Jeans are rather more difficult. And yes, skirts are much easier, but I haven't worn one in decades and can't see myself ever ...

You are all so well organised... My larder is a mess - desperately need to tidy up and check what's required before the possible New Year's chaos. And my garden I don't even want to think about. With only a few hours of daylight at the weekend, I just about remember to pull a couple of leeks before ...

I finally ordered a proper woollen jumper (Guernsey) online - yes, it's expensive, but I'm prepared to pay that for a British made, British wool, proper jumper - but I haven't got it yet. My fingers are getting too stiff for knitting. I have one jumper (Shetland wool) half finished...

Re: Getting the fundamentals right
Although our water isn't metered, I grew up saving water and still do. The garden is full of containers catching rain water, and as I live on my own, keeping the water in my bath for loo and (in summer) watering outside is no problem.

By then climate change will ensure that you won't even need a greenhouse to grow them...Green Aura wrote: ↑Tue Nov 10, 2020 3:00 pm I wasn't expecting anything but currently have six seedling. Only about 20 years to wait for the first harvest. Maybe I should have gone with pineapples.![]()

Not all that easy suddenly acquiring more vans and drivers...Green Aura wrote: ↑Fri Nov 06, 2020 5:55 pm I don't really understand it - you'd think they'd put on more vans if numbers able to get to the supermarket are limited.
I'll see how my usual shop on Sunday morning goes. Buses a nuisance, as always.

Re: What are you harvesting now?
I've now had my last kohlrabi - probably my favourite veg, and I never have enough of them. Still some courgette, although they are getting small and pale; some perpetual spinach, and beetroot. I don't do any pickling; neither vinegar nor sugar agree with me.
And leek! How could I forget that...

Congratulations! I'd love to reduce my hours. Don't think I'm really fit enough to work full time any more, especially with my long commute.

Just as well you've fenced it in securely...
I'm the same - I let things grow where they like, if possible. I think they know where they want to be, and that's why they are so strong! Had a monster broccoli this year. Slow developer, but enormous.

See - the fundamentals do seem to include doctor, dentist, post office and chemist as you get older. Apart from dentist, all within 5 minutes' walk from where I live... Plus a Coop (not my favourite shop, but keeps you alive), and a farm shop a bit further away. I can't really complain. Bus service...

Re: Wartime mincemeat
I once saw a recipe for relatively low-carb Christmas pudding; basically just ground almonds, mixed dried fruit and egg. Maybe some butter as well, and of course mixed spice and a bit of brandy. I always leave out any sugar/sweetener if there's dried fruit in it. Sweet enough!

No blackberries at all this year. They had some kind of disease last year - had it before, everything sort of withered, so I had to cut it back to the ground. Looking very healthy now, but no fruit, of course!
