6 days of broodyness doesn't seem too much to me... Well, it's different if you want the eggs, I suppose. I worked in France once for 6 months, and one of our hens was broody at least half that time. Don't know what she lived on, I never saw her out of her elected brooding place: the hay heck of the...

Glad to see somebody else knows the immense value of loo rolls... I've done broad beans and peas in them in the past, and with that there's another bit of "rubbish" that comes in handy - those plastic punnets you get with fruit (those deep ones without holes - with holes you need a tray un...

Thanks for that link, Matty - I was quite surprised to get into the site. I'm using the institute computer (eh, yeah... ), and they filter out anything that's remotely "unsuitable". So I've not been able to get into any of the other sites mentioned that have "hemp" in the ...

pea problems

Something or somebody has been severely shortening my sugar snap peas! :cussing: They'd been growing reasonably well, protected by wiremesh while they were young, and yesterday I noticed that they were as if cut off at about 20cm (8 inches) height... (They'd fallen over a bit, as I've not got round ...

Just to announce the beginning of the experiment: Yesterday I sowed two pots of basil; identical pots, same growing medium, seeds from the same packet; one pot with seed on top, one with seed covered by about 1cm of soil. They are in my sunniest window (east facing), and if I forget to water one, th...

Just for once we seem to have the good weather up here in Scotland. Hardly any rain for the last 5 days or so, a bit of drizzle this afternoon. Winds slow to fresh, but no storms. Mind you, our local highland games are taking place tomorrow, there's bound to be some rain, even if the forecast is jus...

Stew, I still don't quite see how an ID card would make us more accountable to the authorities than we are already. All the information that would be on there is already recorded somewhere (ok, with the exception of an iris scan or finger print or whatever they decide on, which from my point of view...

I hope that bloke is not right about his predictions! According to him we'll have awful weather the next days, torrential rains and storms... According to www.met-office.gov.uk, which is what I usually check, it's going to be quite nice; dry and warmish. They aren't aways right, either; often their ...

I didn't put that across too well. I wish I could get to a pub more often! Don't worry, I know what you meant - I didn't put you down as a drunk. That's one thing I miss about living in the country though. In town, I did go to a pub maybe once a week; here, there's just nothing within walking range...

What - they know enough about you in pubs??? I'll have to come down and visit you, I'm still looking for somebody to go to the pubs with around here; you seem like the perfect co-pubcrawler to me! And I see you've progressed to a new avatar - the entire good life crew! When do you get that: ov...

Basil really does germinate without soil cover - but it seems it doesn't really matter whether there's soil on it or not... I'll try both ways next time and see what happens. There must be quite a lot of weeds that germinate in light as well, otherwise, why would so many of them multiply by seeding ...

Seeing that Stew mentioned the good old ID card problem, of course I have to add my bit to it... :? Having grown up with one, I actually miss it. The ID card was so incredibly useful; no problems with proving your age when buying alcohol or when in a club at night (admittedly, that was a long time a...

I agree with Lee - these people must be in it for more than just your custom. I would refuse to buy from them (easily said, I know, but if they are the only ones selling what you need...) And I always get a bit confused if they ask me on the phone about my age, or my overdraft limit (admittedly, tha...
