Veg seed viability

I sorted through my seed packets the other weekend to work out what seed I need to buy for next year. I ended up with 6 packets that were past their use by date, or to be precise, 5 past their use by date and one well within. That one was parsnip which I bought last year and stated sow by 2018, but ...

Re: Sales

I'd love a Bose sound system Ah, I'm afraid I did succumb. I've had a pair of Bose wired headphones for ages and would thoroughly recommend them, what I call "high definition" in the audio world. Anyway I've been hankering after some wireless, noise cancelling ones and they had the ones t...

Re: Dig the Fig - The essential guide to all you need to know about figs - Ficus carica

You'll have no trouble growing figs in Cornwall Taff, just so long as you pick a sheltered spot so that those "sea breezes" don't shred those large leaves. I have 2 fig trees here, a Brown Turkey and a white one I can't remember the name of and they thrive with 2 flushes of fruit most year...

Re: I'm now self sufficient in ...

We actually had a frost yesterday, on the grass but no ice. Rather early for here, but missed it this morning by two degrees.
I did notice yesterday that some daffodils have 1" shoots, so spring is on it's way.

Re: Apples in Cornwall

cooking varieties - Bramley would always be my first choice I would have agreed with you until recently, but I personally think that Blenheim Orange has a far superior flavour and for keeping qualities you can't beat Red Boskoop which keeps until May. But as you say, it's a personal thing and depen...

Re: Fried apple

Thanks Flo, but all those recipes are more like puddings. I'm talking about slices of apple, eating or cookers, fried in bacon fat or dripping and eaten as part of a full English breakfast.
Glad to hear you do the same down your way Weedo.

Fried apple

Does anyone else fry apple slices for breakfast ? I was brought up eating fried apple with the breakfast fry-up, especially with sausages. But when I mentioned it to some relatives they thought I was having them on. Is fried apple maybe restricted to fruit growing districts where apples where used t...

Hi Taff
Greetings from another Celtic country you've yet to live in
Mind you I can claim that too and although I have no Celtic roots at all, I lived and worked in Brittany before settling in Ireland.
There must be something about these Celts and their countries.

Re: Make my Wood burner Rayburn heating system work?

First off I'm not a plumber or heating engineer, but I did install pretty much what you're doing years ago when we first moved into this house. One question, did the radiators get hot when you had it running (before the "explosion")? I have no experience of expansion vessels, mine had an e...

Re: Anyone growing Satsumas?

Yes, I grew a satsuma from seed a few years ago, just for fun. It grew fairly fast and took about 5 years to start fruiting, although it flowered sporadically before that. However it was grown in my greenhouse as it wouldn't have survived outside here, so ought to be more at home where you live. I d...

Re: New member hello

Hi there DG, welcome to our forum  It sounds like you have a lot of work on your hands, but it WILL be worth it. It's just a shame that you had to leave a very productive plot and start over again. Where you live should be too much of a problem to get crops all year round, just so long as an e...

Re: Being self sufficient in 2017

I have the opposite problem, or at least different, as I've developed a butterfly mind. I decide to do a job, then on my way to do it I find something else that is more important to do, and while going to get the tools to do the second job I find an even more important job to do. That first job rare...

Re: Peanuts

They definitely weren't green though I meant the leaves are still fairly green. I'll pull them up in a months time and see what they're like. maybe it will come back From what I've read they are similar to Knot Weed, as in almost impossible to get rid of, so should come back next year. I'm pleased ...
