Re: What are you growing right now?

Just got back from 10 days away and found a glut of tomatoes that need bottling today. Apart from that the usual, 2 varieties of Brussels sprouts, PSB, Savoy cabbages, calabrese, cauliflowers, carrots, parsnips, leeks, runner beans still producing in the tunnel and squash still maturing. In the gree...

Re: Does anyone know.....

I don't see why not. I always (without fail) start my squash far too early, then plant them out far too early, and they just sit there rather dejectedly sulking. Then a couple of months later burst into life and rush about trying to take over the world. Your plan of a frost free cool room sounds ide...

Re: Winter storms

I've been looking at the forecast for your neck of the woods, and you've not had a good week or two have you?
Most of the UK sunny and calm except northern Scotland ... wet and windy.
Poor you :hugish:

Re: Apple ID anyone

No, I've got a Discovery, DnD, and that's a lot earlier and a totally different flavour.

I Googled Diplomat apple variety Weedo, but without much success. I haven't heard of it and it seems the rest of the world hasn't either.

Re: Apple ID anyone

I just looked up Katy and I don't think it's that, and it's not a Cox as the colour is wrong. Every apple is a deep maroon red with just a hint of green at the stem end. It doesn't really matter of course, but it is a bit annoying not to know. As it was from Lidl I would have thought it would be a m...

Apple ID anyone

I have an apple tree that I have no idea what variety it is. It was bought from Lidl at an end of season sale price, I think I paid a Euro for it and it was labelled as a Bramley. The rootstock is very dwarfing, it's about 10 years old now and it has grown no taller than 1 metre, and is loaded with ...

It looks to be missing us out, for once. I hope your travel plans go to plan.
Not necessarily Maggie, this is the long range forecast for Thursday midnight.
We are sailing on the Dublin > Holyhead ferry, so not as exposed as further south.

Winter storms

Well it looks like the summer calm is soon over with Hurricane Helene about to come calling. Murphy has dictated that it will hit Ireland next Tuesday just when we are due to catch the ferry to Wales. Maybe it will be delayed a bit, or better still wander off and annoy someone else. . ...

Re: How to grow an Avocado tree

I would advise against getting a "proper job" I wasn't really serious Weedo, I haven't had a job, proper or otherwise, for 25 years and I aint gonna start now. Not that I had many proper jobs before that, as I was mostly self employed. So yes, that allows me to play and try growing new things, just...

I know, I should get a "proper job", Flo.
Never mind, winter is coming and I can play with my radios instead and leave all those poor defenceless plants alone.

Also of note, I finally have a pineapple with roots.
That's something I did on purpose, and have tried before and failed.

Re: How to grow an Avocado tree

But why do you want to grow an avocado? There's self sufficient and being completely .... See point 7 of my instructions, Flo. Probably because I'm soft hearted when it comes to plants, frinstance I sow more tomato seeds than I want, they all germinate and so I HAVE to grow them all regardless. Suc...

How to grow an Avocado tree

'Tis easy. 1 .. Remove stone and eat your Avocado 2 .. Throw stone and skins into your compost bin 3 .. Leave for 6 to 9 months 4 .. Next winter empty compost bin and spread on polytunnel beds 5 .. Wait 2 years and then notice a strange growth in corner of polytunnel 6 .. Dig up strange growth and p...
