Re: Drawing a UK state pension from abroad

I seem to remember reading something about the winter fuel allowance now being available to ex pat pensioners in the EU. Changes came in this year. Note: yes, have looked it up! People used to have to qualify before they left the UK but can now claim provided they have been UK tax/NI payers in the p...

Re: Argument for gun sports?

I expect there are similar statistics for France.

I'm sure they wear the hi-vis caps just to help their chums find and shoot them. :drunken: Especially after a good lunch.

Re: indoor chilli peppers

I've tried it. Difficult/near impossible to get them to germinate and I found that the compost goes mouldy if the humidity is too high.

I would wait until Feb/March to plant them.

Re: here we go again.....

I haven't found an easy way to do it pbf. It's a messy job, scraping away the flesh and stringy bits. Some recipes suggest boiling the seeds to get rid of the gunk. I haven't tried that as I've found you need to dry them out before you spice and roast them otherwise they just steam in their own mois...

Don't waste the seeds! I love roasted pumpkin seeds with Worcestershire sauce. :)

Re: Herman the German Friendship cake

I've just made and passed on a "Herman". It did get on my nerves a bit by taking up worktop space and I had to change the teatowel covering the bowl every day as the mixture bubbled up to the top of the bowl and stuck to the towel. It was in a huge Masons ironstone bowl and every morning I expected ...

Re: Which apple varieties would you recommend?

We added a tree to our orchard when our son was born 9 years ago. He's an "Adam" so it seemed appropriate to plant an apple tree. We chose an Adams Pearmain which is an old variety. It is a lovely eater - a cross between an old English russet and a pippin. Crops well for a young tree and is resistan...

Yes - definitely a curry. Homemade aloo gobi with small spuds and tiny florets of cauliflower. Yum!

Re: Yoghurt

On the topic of yoghurt - does anyone have a view on electric yoghurt makers? I saw today that L1dl have one in their tat selection this week and I wondered whether to splash out €14 on one.

Or would it be just another one of those gadgets that you buy which end up cluttering up the cupboard?

Monty was having a bit of a moan about it too - on Twitter.

He said:

"sport wiping out GW is strange isn't it? Would they ditch football for a month mid season?"

I'm with you OJ on the Horrid Henry thing. My son loves the books, audio books and the TV series...We even went to see the movie on the way to the UK on Brittany Ferries.

Perhaps we could hire a hitman?

At the moment I can see three little glow-worms from the backdoor. I was really excited but the kids were unimpressed especially when I dragged them out of bed on Saturday night to look at them!

And for (most of) the Brits in exile! Well said SusieGee. There isn't much to be happy about at the moment and to see so many people having a good time really gladdens the heart. I wouldn't say I was a raging Royalist either but how can you knock something that gives such joy? ps Yes, it did rain at...

If you do decide to prune it, be very careful. The sap is vicious and if you get it on your skin, it burns!
