Re: Hen keepers' forums
The people who run it / moderate it are, how shall we say, rather proud of their forum, and woe betide you if you post anything in the wrong section, IT WILL BE MOVED! Oh dear that's what I do here! That's a moderator's job. No arguments from me here. I'm just really bored with people thinkin...

Hen keepers' forums
Yes I know, I can get advice and chat about hens here :hugish: but does anyone know of a hen keepers' forum that ISN'T full of people who gush over how they've "rescued" battery hens, written poems about them, have them sitting on their laps watching telly.........you get the idea. I swear...

Re: Where have my plums gone?
Thanks folks. All makes sense. Hopefully the other half's beehives will be up and running for next year and that will help make a difference. In the meantime, I'll just have to rely on the apples and pears, which seem to be fine. Anyone for Bramleys? I've had about half a ton off of one tree in each...

Where have my plums gone?
Two years ago, I had a bumper harvest of plums (one early, ready to pick around late June and a Victoria that comes in later). Last year's harvest was nothing to write home about and this year I have absolutely nothing on them at all, despite loads of blossom. Any ideas?

Just to point out, there are no free chickens. LHR, like any other rescue organisation will ask for a donation in advance.

Re: weight loss bandwaggon!
That is so brilliant. You look really different between the two pics. I started going to Weight Watchers 6 weeks ago and discovered that my problem wasn't what I was eating but how much. I would eat the same size portions as my dh who's 6'3", weighs 15 stone and is in a job that involves him be...

Re: Bee Stock for Top Bar Hive
Thornes will supply queens too. Current cost is £40 including shipping. Their website is at http://www.thorne.co.uk/ . We're in kind of the same boat. Although my husband got hold of a couple of standard second hand hives, it was just too late to get a nucleus (frame), so we're just going to put one...

I love making French Onion soup. The only unfortunate thing about it is it's better in the summer, when you can keep the windows open to deal with the after-effects

Re: Bees
Thanks for the links. My OH has just acquired 2 second hand hives from a local bee keeper who's offered to help him with his bee keeping activities. Unfortunately he got them just in time for everyone to run out of nuclei! So hoping for a swarm to come by soon. There are definitely a lot more bees i...

Re: Hatching ducklings
Thanks for that. By the time I got home from work at lunchtime the one that had hatched was doing ok, pretty active but still drying off, and the one that was hatching still hadn't got round to it. The neighbour came round (picked up his guinea pig that one of our cats had killed and didn't bat an e...

Hatching ducklings
One of our neighbour's ducks found a nice cozy spot in the gravel next to our garage to sit on her eggs. She's been there for a month and sure enough, yesterday 9 ducklings hatched. She duly took them up to show them off and was therefore penned in for the night so as to keep any predators off the d...
