Re: Moral support for crap gardeners
Give up susie and sell to Tes&^ !!! Excellent idea! Ringing them now! That'll teach them a garden full of weeds  Hey I'm sure all this is right. I'm really good at growing all sorts on my allotment that has years of good gardeners prepearing teh soil before me, left unweeded it's wil...

Re: Who's wassailing?lol
I'm sure it's what kept everyone sane many moons ago, it must have been a tough life so a bit of wassailing wouldn't have gone amiss.

Re: Can you put chutney on compost heaps?
It's two pretty large jars.... I do use it in cooking but it might take a while with all I have. It may be fermented rather than simply acidic, it's nearly 2 years old so on the basis they are generally meant to last a year and have gone rather discoloured and odd flavoured I'm just on the lookout f...

sticky stuff to put round trees
I'm being lectured at by many to put these sticky bands round my new apple trees, I didn't last winter and I realise it will keep a few bugs out but if it's the odd grub I can eat round if the bands are laiden with nasty chemicals- I don't mind if I'm not completely organic but I'm not using chemcic...

Re: Frugal Gardening Tips
Oh absolutely don't be frugal with buying seeds- the cheap cones have rubbish germination rates. Good seeds you can seedsave from next year so a real investment! I've started seedsaving the easy stuff (peas, beans) and have added a few things to the list each year so as not to frighten myself too mu...

Can you put chutney on compost heaps?
I'm really loahed to throw anything away but this chutney is 09 and a bit acidic now...and there's lots of fresh lovely chutney I don't want to go off. But where do I throw it, do I really have to surrender it to the bin or can I use it in the compost (or another way?) I'm a bit worried about compos...

Re: Capsicum/chilli plants hanging on...
Last year I grew a few plants and got a novilty amount of crop, then 'overwintered' a few plants inside. This year I have a greenhouse  so I grew quite a few plants to get myself enough to be worth it and also put my overwintered one surviving plant. Think my house may be a bit cold for...

Re: horse manure?
In theory what they say you should do is manure it for your potatoes, then next year move onto either legumes (peas/beans) or lime it for the cabbage family, then do the other one and last plant carrots/onions/parsnips so it hasn't had manure for a few years and other crops have used it up a bit. Th...

Sweet Potatoes
I bought some slips this year for the first time, and they have all taken very well- actually they don't complain about the dry weather.
Does anyone know when they are ready- how can I teell other than dig them up (very expensive slips so hoping there is another way...).

Re: Watering, how are you managing with no rain?
Just when work has eased a bit so I could actually have a look as 'ish' the weather has done THIS! so I'm watering for 2 hours a night! Having run out of water but months ago I was just getting sick of the watering can runs to the, what seems like evr more distant, allotment tap, when my brother cam...
