Lettuce Leaf Miner

My lettuce is constantly being attacked by leaf miners. There are little white spots and then white trails going through some of the leaves. I don't know how they find it, because I live on the 5th floor of an apartment building. So far I've just removed the affected leaves, but there seems to be mo...

ohareward, the eggplant is planted in a large pot on my balcony outside which gets a lot of sun and has a glass roof and had been getting very warm (35 degrees celsius or more - Freiburg is the warmest place in Germany) with the weather we were having. This probably helped it along!

Vegetable flowers are beautiful!

I am growing (among other things) eggplant for the first time this year. Embarassingly enough I had never seen an eggplant plant before  . This morning the first flower opened and it's surprisingly beautiful! A star shaped purple flower. I may plant vegetables instead of flowers in the flower ...

I planted chili peppers and bell peppers from the vegetables that I bought at the grocery store. They've all came up and seem to be fine. The chili's are still pretty small. I have to admit that I'm very curious to see what the plants are going to look like! I've heard that with tomatoes that you ca...

What kind of stuff do you put in your wormery? Everything you'd put in a compost pile? Just kitchen scraps? Just plant waste? I think I may be able to sneek that by! What is the maximum temperature that the worms can withstand? My balcony can get really hot, upwards of 40 degrees celsius.

My very first tomato ever!

I planted a vegetable garden for the first time this year and this morning, I noticed a very tiny green tomato where a flower had been yesterday. Yeh! The very first tomato that I ever grew! There should be lots more though where it came from, since we have five tomato plants.

Thanks Matty for the advice! That's an interesting technique for growing the spores. Unfortunately time is a limiting factor for me at the moment, so I may just spend the nine euro and buy the fertilizer with fungus. If I get a little free time, I'll try that method out. I would love to have a compo...

Way cool! I wish I had a piece of land for a garden. Since I don't I started a container garden with my flat-mates. I made a list of everything we've got growing, and its amazing what all fits on our balcony (granted we do have a rather large balcony, and actually there are three balconies): - chili...

Mychorrizal Symbiosis

I am looking for a good organic fertilizer for my container garden (don't have access to good compost). I found a brand that advertises that it contains mychorrizal fungus. I am familiar with these fungus from their natural symbiosis with Red Alder trees where they fix nitrogen in the soil, but have...

I considered growing tea myself, but since I'm a fan of black tea and don't like green tea at all, I didn't think it would be worth while. Unless someone knows how to make black tea out of fresh tea leaves?

It was an accident! I didn't realize that it posted it into the forum that you were just in. So then I put it in the fruit forum and wanted to delete it out of the vegetable forum, but couldn't sorry! I won't do it again

I have a dwarf calamondin tree that's got lots of tiny oranges on it. I thought I would try them in ice tea or candying them to go with desserts.

Pumpkins in Panty-hose

I want to grow pumpkins on my balcony (already bought a HUGE container for them and a small variety), and would like to try the trellis method. I've read all over that you can use panty-hose to hold the pumpkins up, but I'm still not quite sure how this is supposed to work. Do you put the pumpkin in...

I've read on a couple of websites that they are self pollinating, but that shaking the flowers lightly helps distribute the pollen.
