Re: How do I learn to make my own clothes?

I took a course, and I found it really helpful. Being a total novice, all the books etc I looked at to teach myself seemed to be written in a foreign language (baste? selvedge? mitred corners?) and it was really useful to be shown how to do things. I'd recommend it if you can afford it. I also agree...

Re: Self Sufficientish Weddings

i gave in. i was going to make my dress but after looking at the cost of fabric, the amount of work and risk, and tried on a dress in the sale at the local wedding shop that made me feel like an absolute goddess, i gave in and bought one. it was reduced to £320  which is a lot of money, over ...

Re: Need some advice please

This might have been suggested before, but could you photograph these meals and make some kind of photo-diary/blog of these hideous food experiences?

Re: Need some advice please

This is a subject quite close to my heart, and I shall spare you my incoherent ranting on a) how terrible hospital food is and b) how bl**dy difficult it is to do anything about it. It seems glaringly obvious to any reasonable person that feeding good food to sick people is just common sense (and th...

Re: How do I get motivated?

It depends what is stopping you or what you find yourself doing when you get distracted, and also what you respond best to in terms of organisation. Some people like lists and timetables, some people find them pressurising and it makes it worse. You say you are busy and seem to get lots done, so it'...

Can't do much about most of those except offer sympathy :hugish: but a doctor once told me that if you have a pill trapped in your throat it sometimes feels like it's there for a while after it's gone.

Fellow addict here. I keep time by it some days. Am currently enjoying the dramatisation of 'What a Carve-Up!', which is one of my favourite books. Also like many of the comedies, and The Food Programme.

Re: Thinking about keeping bees?

I also found the article really interesting, thanks. I'm also interested in keeping bees some day and am going on a taster session in June!

There's a talk on CCD here if anybody's interested:

My dad confused me for ages when I was young with:

There was a young curate from Salisbury
whose manners were quite halisbury-scalisbury.
He went around Hampshire
without any pampshire
'til his bishop compelled him to walisbury.

Re: If only I did more.....

I feel the same sometimes too. I had to give myself a stern talking-to last summer as I was heading for meltdown, trying to learn beekeeping and spinning, on top of taking on an allotment and everything else I already did. I think this kind of life does tend to snowball... You're always meeting or r...

I can't tell you all how relieved I am to hear that you all get the same reaction as me. Weird / eccentric / odd / mean / old-fashioned etc etc I've heard them all. Actually I'm proud of all of the 'labels' they stick on me (except the 'mean' one) :( Perhaps this thread could turn into an ishers se...

If you're worried about them seeing it when sterilising, then sterilise it in milton instead. I used to use milton to sterilise mine -that way you can put some hot water in a flas, add a few teaspoons of milton, drop your cup in the flask and take it to your room, pretending that its tea. Then, tip...
