I like the episode where Tom & Barbara are invited to dinner next door but they decline as they have something `special` at home. Tom is supposed to kill a chicken and they sit down in posh evening clothes to eat al fresco. But the hen laid an egg as Tom fired his gun and they were carving a lov...

Hi Judy, great site! I know I`ll use it lots, including Amazon! One thing you may know, I used to get the TLIO newsletter, being a life member, but it seems to have stopped. Do you know anything about it?

Hi Sue, I buy and use durum wheat flour all the time but in the UK it`s called semolina! It makes good pasta but it`s more expensive than ordinary flour. Perhaps you can mix it with plain. Let me know how you get on. Good luck.

Hello Mary, welcome! I`m a crone and find the site friendly and useful. As for having a PC - free youth! When I left school I was a trainee accountant in a nationalised industry. I was approached by a boss of another department and offered a transfer. I went to see my boss and told him I`d been offe...

By cutting plastic bags into strips about an inch wide you can knit them into really strong shopping bags. If you feel artistic you can even use the different colours to make patterns. If you start cutting in a sort of spiral you get long lengths. By the way, has anybody got any brilliant ideas abou...

About growing in our gardens. I used to teach in a school in a `disadvantaged` area where there was a lot of poverty and unemployment. Many of the kids were malnourished in some way, either sickly/skinny or pasty/chubby. Thing is - most of their meals seemed to consist of over-processed convenience ...

Hi Andy! I find that the old beer trap works quite well - a shallow container of beer buried in the ground - a cm or two above the surface so that you don`t trap ground beetles. It traps and drowns loads. Trouble is, there`s loads left. Derek says that they probably come from miles around to sample ...

Peppers

Hello Guest! I had a smashing crop of peppers in our unheated greenhouse last year. They grew lovely and big and also ripened to a rich red. I started them off in trays and then pricked them out as usual. Can`t remember the exact time but it was just what it said on the seed packet! We had enough to...

Gosh thanks!

Thanks for making me feel welcome! Actually, although we don`t live in the actual countryside we can be a bit greener because we don`t need to drive a car. It`s good to be in walking distance of doctor/library/allotment etc. Perhaps a small country market town would be the best of both worlds but th...

Hello folks

Helo, I`m new. I`m really pleased to find a self sufficientish site. We`ve down shifted from working for money to trying to grow our own food on our allotment and being as green as possible. (Okay, we`ve got a pension to live on as well!) But we live in a semi-rural semi and there`s no way we could ...
