Re: Strawberries

We are into the variety thing again; I simply cannot get your varieties here even under other names even though there are about 30 varieties in the marketplace here. It seems the only day neutral variety available is "Melba", an Oz bred variety - I can get "Cambridge Rival" through one supplier and ...

Re: Strawberries

I agree Kathy, the runnerless variety I have (no doubt different to yours) is certainly inferior in all aspects. This is why I removed it from the main bed, broke up the clumps and planted the "daughter" plants in a "one last chance" bed on their own.

Re: What are you growing right now?

Yes Penny, almost exactly opposite seasons which is a "cheat" for me because I can check what you folks are planting and plan ahead (I am a newbie at Ishing). I spent a day in the veg garden on Sunday (a rare event for me) getting my blood pressure under control after dealing with people whose attit...

Re: Strawberries

year I planted a "runnerless" variety called Pink. It fruited OKish but not as heavily as the older varieties and with smaller fruit. This variety forms tightly matted clumps rather than runner but they are still daughter plants as far as I am concerned. Anyone with experience of these types and bre...

Re: Apple ID anyone

Probably not Odsox; it was an old variety when I was picking as a teenager so it is possibly almost extinct.

Re: Whey wine (Blaand)

Thanks Bernard - Yes, I was warned against Grapefruit after the last heart attack - apparently very high in Potassium which interferes with the Blood pressure and stabilising meds. Since I ditched all meds quite a while ago not a problem for me personally (except I don't like them)

Guys, remember I have a standing order for any excess rain you can spare, sans wind of course.

Re: Apple ID anyone

Acknowledging the differing vareties and names berween us, apple looks similar to a Diplomat. This variety is (was - I haven't seen it for many years) later season, smaller and more tart than the other "eating apples" like Johnathan, Five Crown and Delicious. It was also known for not keeping and us...

Re: Whey wine (Blaand)

Lemon Wine? I have a gross excess of grapefruit (I can't find anyone who eats it, not even the cows or horses), perhaps mixed with other citrus I have available a reasonable wine could be forthcoming?

Re: How to grow an Avocado tree

I'm with you all the way Odsox - I will try anything just for the thrill of growing something different. I would advise against getting a "proper job"; I have one and it provides no real positives other than to keep the bank manager happy(ish). I got far more physical and psycological benefit from s...

Re: How to grow an Avocado tree

Avocados are strange folk - like sunshine and water, hate wet feet - grow to about10 feet but have a poor root system - will grow well indoors but rarely fruit and are poorly self fertile. Generally take about 5 years to reach fruiting stage in commercial orhards. I know of a number of healty trees ...

Re: RAIN !!

The river is back up, running about 2 metres higher than the pic. unfortunately it is from water released for irrigation industries downstream and not rain. Due to the foibles of Federal Government finding I have just finished planting the new tree corrindor on the eastern Boundary (or rather the co...
