Re: Tomato Fail!
Thank you all for the excellent advice! I think I'll try both approaches: I'll start some more of my own seeds off again, but in case they don't work I'll also ask around to try to get some that are already started. I don't *think* it would have been my compost as I other things have started coming ...

Tomato Fail!
A few weeks ago I impulsively bought one of those vegetable growing magazines and it had some free tomato seeds with it, so I thought I might as well try them. I planted them - about three different varieties - and none of them has germinated. I followed the instructions on the packet but I guess th...

Re: My first cheese!
Thank you for all the advice; it's extremely useful! The cottage cheese tasted fine; next time I'll look at tweaking my method a bit to get the texture more how I'd like it. And try ricotta!

My first cheese!
Not very exciting - just some cottage cheese which I made out of a pint of milk I never used. But still, exciting for me because I've never made cheese before! One question though. When you buy cottage cheese it's generally quite wet and the lumps are quite big... mine is dry and crumbly... is this ...

Re: What are you harvesting atm?
I've just harvested the spring onions that I've grown off the ends of other spring onions (or possibly the same spring onions?). Anyway, they grew jolly fast.

Re: working for yourself?
Oh wow, you are brave! Good luck; I'm sure you'll have a great day. I'd love to work for myself... a friend and I are hoping to start up soon making wheelchair etc accessories for disabled and elderly people. We're currently doing a bit of research. But neither of us will be giving up the day job an...

Re: Yo from York
Well, I've now posted on Freecycle asking for a sewing machine so fingers crossed... (I too would probably feel embarrassed, but I've offered quite a few things including an item for someone else who was asking for something, so it kind of feels ok) Flo, thank you for the explanation of proggy mats!...

Re: Yo from York
Thank you all! Flo, I'm sure I'm being terribly dense, but what in the world is a 'proggy mat'? I am learning sewing and want to learn dressmaking, but I haven't a sewing machine and can't afford to buy one right now, so that, sadly, might have to wait. I'm doing a bit of upcycling tho...

Yo from York
Hallo! I'm Abi (perhaps obviously), I'm from York (again...) and I'd really like to become more self-sufficient. I live in a little terraced house with a fairly tiny yard, so this could be interesting, particularly as I have no money. But I'm making myself some plant pots out of cardboard boxes line...
