I grew a mini variety having been warned the vines run rampant. Hopefully next year will get better than a mini harvest.

It's a pity it doesn't work for animals and birds.

I think MMM the last point may be the answer. It's just they are already growing cucumbers - although still tiny. Perhaps it's a bit like the tomatoes; leggy and half dead but keen on producing fruit. Still have a few weeks to get replacements so I should wait and see.

Over here you can buy a bundle of slips. These are buried at an angle (some people flush), leaving the new growth protruding. I think you should aim to get at least two nodes underground. Spacing is usually about 45cm x 90 cm.
