Re: Latest addition to our family

Shame you had to part ways but sounds like it was for the best. I would however say that 3-4 days is way too short to expect adult cats to get on, and they should be separated first for a good while. Glad the shelter owners decided to keep him and I hope Liesl has recovered!

Re: Organic hydroponic nutrient

I'm just about ready to start my lettuce raft hydroponics experiment and I've been looking to make an organic homemade nutrient, so this is great, thanks for posting. Unfortunately for me though, I'm not blessed like you guys on the British isles with an abundance of seaweed to get the nutrients fro...

Re: Not buy anything new 2014

I would definitely not buy undies from a charity shop, even if they looked new. I have however been trying to make some with my sewing machine and the abundance of unused fabric I have. So far they are hideous/wonky/the thread is bunching out as I appear to have the wrong setting on the sewing machi...

Re: Latest addition to our family

What a beauty! And well done for giving an older cat a nice retirement home, wish more people would think of adopting e,dearly cats, they can be so rewarding and often have more life in them than most younger cats! I have two adopted adult cats, and when I got the second one, Mieze, I kept the two s...

Re: What are you reading?

Good point. Everyone I talk to about foraging here (mostly non-Germans to be fair) so far seems to think I'm mad/cheap/a stereotype (oh my gosh what is with the Scottish cheap stereotype here, half the shops are called Mc-something or other or have a Scottie or tartan for a logo!)/poor haha. They us...

Re: Should you remove parasitic Fungi

Unless it's your own tree you are growing in your garden and you are desperate to keep it, then I'd just let nature take it's course. The death of this old tree, both the process and the final result itself, is beneficial to so many different organisms, and the death of an old tree usually also caus...

Re: Turkish Hazel

Are they as scary as other similar nuts for roasting (there was one I was reading can be seen to be ready when one explodes violently)? Haha I imagine they'd be delicious roasted, never roasted any nuts before, will ask my man to help, he's the chef (aka he's braver than me in the kitchen). Haha not...

Re: What are these berries (And nut)?!

I have found out now that the nut is in fact Turkish Hazel (Corylus colurna) which is like Common Hazel only much smaller and with a much thicker nut shell. Also I have noticed that there are red Rose Hips growing in the same line of bushes as the black Rose Hips. Thanks for the help with IDing! Hav...

Turkish Hazel

I realise that since this doesn't grow in the UK as far as I know, it might be pushing it, but does anyone here know any good uses for Turkish Hazel? Is it just the same as Common Hazel other than being smaller and having much harder nut shells? And what's the best way to crack the nuts? Also I assu...

Ooh lucky for some! Those sound great! Awch I'm quite jealous haha, it'll be ages till I'm back in Scotland to get shopping again haha. Was hoping to get back for Christmas but I don't think I can now coz of work. I've only worked there one day and I'm already complaining about work haha, oh dear :P

Re: What are you reading?

Hahaa his book is more about his journey though, living completely without money rather than about how to do it. He has his second book online for free though, on his website, which seems to be more tips and things. I've not looked at that one though yet. Haha I would like to start learning to forag...

Re: What are you reading?

Finished The Moneyless Man the other week, loved it! Would really recommend it. I found it really inspiring and in contrast to the No Impact Man book, I was delighted to see that the author of The Moneyless Man kept living that way in the end (and appears to be starting a wee moneyless place in Irel...

Re: Not buy anything new 2014

Haha I'm embarrassed to say, I got a job in a big pet shop (although I am completely against the sale of live animals in shops). It's mostly just to improve my German so I can get a job I actually want. Plus without it I'd have run out of money and ended up living on the street (certainly wouldn't b...
