Re: 101 uses for old car tyres
A disabled plotholder at my local site has been ejecte after several requests for her to clear her mess up. A mess that included stacks of tyres which she was hoping to use as raised planters. Since then, the site manager has been left with the task of removing several stacks of tyres, which would c...

Re: down at the allotment and in the garden what are you up to
A major problem that has come from the enthusiastic growth in home growing, a lack of easily available composting materials. Now everyone is either religiously recycling and sending everything to the municipal centre or digging for victory in their own window boxes. As a result, us long term origina...

Re: tell me about broad beans
I did the successional growing thing this/last year. Started in November, then followed in December(I'm in a south west coast bay) and more in spring. Eventually had so many I was making great compost from them. Will try fewer but just as often this time.It is very tempting to plant too many when th...

Re: A communal self suffiency garden
Try putting an ad in the local press, indicating that something of value has been discovered there. You'll soon find the rightful owners springing up! I would be wrong to encourage you to hint that something criminally sensitive could be buriied so that the Police turn up and dig the place over..so ...

Re: Selfsufficientish blog
Good blog, I'm already following the Myspace one too. I am becoming dangerously addicted to blogging myself. I also have a wordpress on linked to my Chamber work, a local newspaper one (weston Mercury) and I blog for the local allotments association too. The problem is not repeating myself on any of...

Re: please can i blow my own trumpet?!!
This is a typical compost bin combo, the vigilante bin converters are craftily slipping them in everywhere.

Re: please can i blow my own trumpet?!!
Must get around to posting some pictures from our site. Since the security fencing went up many of the plotholders have been confident enough to put up hanging baskets and greenhouses. The compost bins are a work of art. The plotholders with cars were getting scratches from the rusting corrugated ir...

There is something completely and deeply satisfying about sliding those dried vines off the cane and into the barrow.
I spent a couple of hours sunday doing just that. Time well spent massaging the soul.

Re: down at the allotment and in the garden what are you up to
The onions at our site were hit by White Rot and some cases of Soft Neck so I was pleasently surprised to have any survive this year. My Reds were utter rubbish, more than 80% bolted very early. All from sets but I was oddly advised by the site rep that it was better to buy from a main commercial ou...

Yup, looks like daikon!
Looked at some recipes too, so I may finally have a justifiable reason for growing so much lol.
Tempted to try the black/niger variety too now. Thanks!

So my resulting sweet sticky poison can't be put to any good use then?
I'm loathe to waste stuff but if it's not going to produce anything regardless then I will at least save the empties.Raisin wine...?
Sounds good!

Orientals Anyone?
I've been growing some great long white roots this year, not parsnips or even fancy carrots but Oriental Radishes. Raphanus sativus niger is it's latin name and it apparently comes in a lot of different forms but I only know the long white ones. Thinly sliced, they are good in a salad or mixed sandw...

Re: down at the allotment and in the garden what are you up to
Have been clearing ground, where my early french beans were growing up a wigwam. Cleared away the failure that was my Three Sisters Bed. Sweetcorn was late and small, so beans had nothing to support them and the squash made a heading for the footpath! Started selecting next years runner seeds from t...

Re: Pumpkins
I have grown pumpkins and other squash for a while and I have found that Hundredweight, like a lot of competition varieties isn't the best choice for flavour. Butternut remian stripey until they ripen, something you can do indoors on a sunny windowsill if the weather is against you. Squash can be tr...
