Re: What are you harvesting atm?
Being in a different country where things grow quicker I don't really count, but if anyone is interested we have to try to get things in early as I have learned that because of the hot weather and pests successional sowing doesn't work. We can try to get more peas and potatoes, even cucumber in at t...

Re: First bread maker
I started with a breadmaker, but after a while used it jut for mixing and the first prove, I prefer the flavour of oven baked bread. Now it's somewhere in the cellar and I use my Kenwood Chef to mix and knead (got arthritis) Haven't bought bread for 18 months.

Re: red coating on some seeds
It seems fairly common here, I believe it is a fungicide and pest repellent but not positive. Unfortunately local seed packets are all in Bulgarian so there is no way of knowing till you open the packet. I get a lot of my seed from the UK, (but try to get them in the sales) but some varieties just d...

Re: Old seeds
I don't see why not, if you're careful. But the idea is just ti try a couple to see if they are viable. Even so, older seeds will have a lower germination rate so I would sow more than I needed. It's hard to have to chuck out seedlings though. I have just over-sown the local pink beefsteak tomatoes ...

Re: Old seeds
You could do some tests by putting some on some damp kitchen paper indoors and seeing if they sprout.

Re: Hand Made Wedding
Aww sorry about your Dad. For your evening do....do you have any fruit/veg/flower markets about where you might get a deal on mass spring flowers? That way you could go over the top with flowers and dress up a village hall. If you really want hand made, how about having a basic buffet and asking peo...

Re: Hand Made Wedding
Being a more mature couple we went for a registry office wedding nd a meal in a local restaurant (30 of us). We made all the invitations, silk bouquets, buttonholes (from the garden) and cake ourselves. Not because we had to but to make it more personal. And it was very special. At night we just wen...

Re: How Selfsufficientish were you in 2014
Not done too badly for our first year considering we had the worst summer here in Bulgaria in living memory. We had problems with our onions and had to freeze a lot of them, mainly due to hot, wet conditions, but we only have to but the occasional one for fresh use, they are lasting out well from th...

Re: A self sufficientish Christmas?
Don't do presents, just some home made goodies for the neighbours. Most food is home grown, but ingredients for cake and mincemeat bought, apart from some home dried raisins and figs and walnuts...and eggs of course. Walnut roast for me, home grown goose for him. All home grown veg (sprouts, parsnip...

Re: Hello from Southern Catalunya, Spain
Hello and welcome. We moved to Bulgaria for similar reasons and after 16 months we are pretty self sufficinet in fruit, veg and nuts. We have fruit and nuts in the garden and have others that we don't grow 'donated' by the neighbours, we also exchange produce with others for what we don't grow and f...

Re: Whey
That's it then, I will become musclebound, I'll become a Charles Atlas lookalike instead of the 7 stone weakling (remember them ?) Tosca, your using it in bread making sounds like a great idea, I'll give it a go in the next batch. Does it flavour the bread, make it a bit like sourdough ? I think it...

Re: Whey
I've made ricotta after making cheese, very nice flavoured with herbs and garlic. But any liquid from cheese, butter or yoghurt usually goes into bread which I make every other day, or the crusts of the bread broken up and soaked with whey for the chooks, with added veg and whatever else is handy fo...
