Re: Vegetarian diet

Thanks for that recipe GA , I'll have to give it a go at some point although there may well be a substitution or two as I'll use whatever I've got first.

Re: Vegetarian diet

Greer wrote a piece recently about diets and veganism and makes for interesting reading. https://www.ecosophia.net/dream-perfect-diet/ I wouldn't mind looking at your recipe for vegan bacon GA . Like you I'm not a huge fan of tofu or aubergine as I find them a tad tasteless so anything that improves...

Re: Vegetarian diet

I had a spell of purely vegetarian diet but I came to my own conclusion that eating an animal wasn't in itself wrong , after all there are thousands of other species who survive by consuming other creatures . If it is wrong for a human to eat meat then it must be equally wrong for a lion to do the s...

Re: Banish Plastic

Looking back at the discussion - mostly supermarket shopping plastic - well now that £5 and £10 notes in England are plastic - hmm, you ain't going to ban plastic when shopping. If you use a card it's plastic and if you use money it's plastic. Now that does make it hard to cut down on plasti...

Re: The new banish plastic movements

https://uk.whogivesacrap.org/ Thanks for that. I'll post a link , https://www.amazon.co.uk/Essentials-Sheet-Toilet-Tissue-Rolls/dp/B01MZ6CHM0/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1517516020&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=toilet+rolls&psc=1 A link that frankly in many ways is frustrating .ok so the roll sizes are dif...

Re: The new banish plastic movements

Does toilet roll come in paper wrappings these days , or at least what we may call mainstream products because as far as I can see ( not that I do much looking ) it all has plastic outer wrapping. Incidentally when I mentioned the portaloo tale the rolls normally come in pairs but perhaps I wasn't c...

Re: The new banish plastic movements

I had to check just what family cloths are and I'm , hmm , in two minds. Less trees chopped up but then probably quite a bit of energy would get used in the washing of them. Still the Romans used a sponge on a stick so perfectly viable . Personally I just use bog standard paper ( see what I did ther...

Re: The new banish plastic movements

I was under the impression that toilet roll was always made with a percentage of recycled materials. On the subject of Green Aura's two lecturers while I can see the point about the amount of energy used to transport and process paper for recycling I do wonder how that balances up with the transport...

Re: The new banish plastic movements

One type of plastic that really infuriates me is the shrink wrap used on ironmongery . I was again reminded of this today when putting up a handrail , the brackets were supplied in pairs shrink wrapped on a piece of card. It's not the sort of plastic that can be easily removed and left at the shop e...

Re: The new banish plastic movements

I must admit I'm in two minds about the incineration to provide power as it has good points and bad. My father worked at an incinerator in the '70's but all that did was convert household waste to ash to reduce landfill although they did remove the tin cans but all the heat was simply wasted. Even b...

Re: The new banish plastic movements

Slightly paradoxically, China are not accepting the plastics which in a large part they are creating in the form of cheap consumer goods I know what you mean there. I suppose in some ways I can sit on the fence a bit. The plastic is or was being recycled ( albeit to a degree into stuff nobody reall...

Re: The new banish plastic movements

Yes I've considered doing that before now but have wondered just how much of effect it has. Leaving the packaging at the supermarket might not influence the producers at all but just merely inconvenience the supermarket themselves. Perhaps it might get more noticed with own brand goods where the sup...

Re: The new banish plastic movements

I fear the sudden Government concern re plastic is a smokescreen, rather than a commitment, but I definitely won't go there. I've heard others say just that . Personally I do wonder just how much of a coincidence it is that this announcement comes so soon after China's decision to limit waste ...

Here's a few ideas though in all honesty there doesn't seem to be a great deal that can be done with them , https://www.wired.com/2011/09/18650-things-to-do-with-an-old-laptop-battery/ and similar ideas here, http://www.instructables.com/id/7-Ways-to-Reuse-a-Laptop-Battery/ Seems to be the only real...

Re: Storm Dylan?

You folks name winter storms? Cool! . From what I've read it would seem that the public pay more attention if a storm is named. Anicdotally I've noticed people do speak more of a named storm than just bad weather although whether they then take more precautions or heed the warnings more is probably...
