Re: Mattresses

I went to our local tip recently . It's not a place I visit very often but I was a little shocked or impressed , I'm not sure which , to see what I could only describe as a mattress mountain. They're probably running close with sofas as awkward to recycle with the mixed materials and whatnot . I bel...

Re: RenewableCandy's Hardcore challenge

Let's hope the weather stays decent after all that shovelling so you can enjoy it all. The "nice round gravel" you mention , I do hope you have ordered the 10mm rather than the 20mm. The larger is cheaper and really is meant to be used in concrete but because it's cheaper a lot of people go for it. ...

Re: Mattresses

Irony of posting a thread about mattresses . My wife's brother has been having marital issues and had moved in with us for a little while ( he's now at his dad's while he and his wife try to sort things out) . My wife made up a bed for him in the admittedly small spare room using one of those travel...

Re: No rubbish fortnight

It's recently gotten a tad worse round by us since the council have started to charge for dumping certain stuff. Our garden waste bins cost £36 a year ( and I don't understand why some have waited until nearly June to sign up) , bags of rubble cost £4 to dump , a toilet or sink the same and there ar...

Re: No rubbish fortnight

Nah - let the world know what's become of these unwanted bags. I'll try to do that. Funny thing is with the compost heaps , wood burner, recycling and garden waste bins we have very little actual rubbish to go in our bin. Certainly very little "domestic" rubbish. Sometimes I do produce sh...

Re: What to do with a field?

Well ,nearly five years since I posed this question and seeing as RC has dug it up perhaps worth an update. The sheep have gone and the field is now home to one quite ancient horse , I'm not sure about rents or whatever as I haven't inquired that much. My friend purchased a small tractor with a topp...

Re: No rubbish fortnight

I use them for rubbish too . Perhaps it's guilt thing but I tend to turn them inside out before filling them.

Re: How many hours a day does it take?

A lot will depend on the state of the plot in the first place . If the land has been neglected you could spend a good deal of time clearing vegetation, weeds ,or worse , getting fences and hedges in order , and ditches or drains to go in perhaps . Part off my daily job is looking after people's gard...

Re: Food waste

I suspect that if people only bought what they were going to use over the next week or so there would be a lot less of a hang up about best before and use by. I cannot deny the logic of that one little bit. However , it's perhaps the doomer in me that wouldn't feel easy having only a weeks worth of...

Re: Food waste

One thing I have picked up is that food producers have a legal obligation to place either a use by or a best before date on their products. As we know best before is about quality and is only a guide. Use by is about food safety . This has made me think , if it's accepted that food deteriorates and ...

Re: If you could...would you private jet everywhere?

Oh I agree there is a conundrum here and fully understand that we use energy in pretty much all that we do. Using energy to make tools or grow food for instance I have no real problem with . It's more the frivolous uses we make of the available energy that sits a bit uncomfortably with me. Jetting o...

Re: RenewableCandy's Hardcore challenge

Not wanting to seem a downer but from experience I have found that the membrane doesn't suppress all the weeds for ever. Dirt will start to build up in the gravel and small weeds will start to grow . Ok so being largely in gravel means they will pull out easily but it does knock the whole maintainen...

Re: Selling off eggs from chickens - tax concern?

I have one friend who has found what may be termed a loophole for selling food. We are both re-enactors and several years ago I built a portable bread oven which I unfortunately don't use now but my friend now has one she uses. She came up with the idea of pastries and pies and thought about selling...

Re: If you could...would you private jet everywhere?

As a former military pilot, I love flying. But I really can't justify it, especially not for recreational purposes. I fear you are truly in a minority . Most feel perfectly justified in taking flights just to sit on a beach achieving nothing except the reduction in world booze stocks " because I've...
