Pretty tree ID
Have yet to take a photo, but maybe someone could ID from my description. There's a tree about 6ft tall & 6ft wide in a front garden down the road with large (fist sized) pinkish white, upward pointing flowers on. The flowers are sort of lily like, no leaves just lots and lots of big flowers. An...

Re: Living mulch?
Humm, mixed opinions! Perhaps if I do the pots on top thing with nasturtiums and allow them to trail over mud surface for shade, plus a couple of pots of poppies. Then they'll self seed in the containers for next year when trees might be a bit better established? Or could experiment and use non-livi...

Re: Living mulch?
I have cornflower and poppy seeds? Would they create much shade though?

Living mulch?
Tried trawling the internet for ideas but none came up. I've just planted two fruit trees (plum) in big containers in the garden made out of pallets, there's loads of bare soil around the trees as they're only tiny with skinny trunks so was wondering about using the space on the top of the soil for ...

Re: Vertical gardening
First day of sun yesterday, so made a start on the first pallet garden with a trough like bit at the bottom to make it more stable and increase growing space. This is a short one for under the brick barbecue thing we're going to fill with soil for squashes. Didn't have the 'proper' material, and the...

Re: Vertical gardening
DND: Good ideas, thanks. Have you grown acorn squash before? If so how many plants would you recommend for a decent harvest? I tried a few years ago but it was the year with the weird frosts so no luck. I've been getting inspiration from the verticalveg blog already; I want to make a wormery now. Co...

Re: Vertical gardening
Thanks MKG, and yep you're right about the anchoring issue! In the lower wall (about 7ft) there are already eyelets for wire, but the big wall hasn't got any that I've seen so that will be a bit of a problem. There are two hooks on the lower roof (11ft) which I can use too for that really thick chic...

Vertical gardening
Our patio garden at our new flat is I would guess about 14m2 in total, but as we have loads of upwards space (about 16ft to the neighbours window above) we're going to try out vertical gardening as much as we can. Obviously we haven't started yet, but as we go on I'll post pics, plans and updates on...

Re: volunteering on a farm
I would recommend https://www.helpx.net/ , I spent 4 months volunteering with them at the beginning of this year (Feb-May) and it is something I'd highly recommend doing. I learnt so much, and it's incredible to see how really different the ways are that people manage living self-sufficientishly are...

Re: Christmas Decorations
Sorry for not replying sooner, it seemed there was something wrong with my account as it signed me out whenever I clicked send! Anyway, Crickleymal: Pins! They're still going strong too, still green and still very prickly :pale: Thanks everyone for your kind comments! I should have taken pictures of...

Re: Old VHSs
The first thing I thought was how it'd be fun to stick them together like bricks to make a retro style planter, not sure if glue would be strong enough to hold them together if it were to carry that much mud though.

Re: Christmas Decorations
Thanks! I dried them in the oven on the lowest heat, they actually burnt a bit but I think I've hidden most of that with the holly. I have some more that are kind of squidgey in the middle still so might put them back in the oven, better burnt than mouldy I guess!

Christmas Decorations
This year, as we have just moved into our first proper place of our own (not shared/staff accommodation) and starting all new with christmas decorations as we haven't got anything like that, we decided to make everything ourselves. Most of what I make either a) Never gets finished, or, b) Looks cack...
