Re: what are you foraging today

Well, I cooked and ate my mushrooms and I am still alive, so the ID was sound. A council bloke came today with a petrol mower and cut down all the grass (and mushrooms) so I may need to wait a while for the next lot. The council are excelling themselves round here - last summer they des...

Re: what are you foraging today

Thanks, diggernotdreamer and fungi2bwith. I don't think they are St George's mushrooms - I did find those in the guide and thought, 'Yes!' when I saw the date....but they don't quite fit the ID. There's that cogwheel pattern for a start. If horse mushrooms appear in spring, I appear to have got myse...

Re: what are you foraging today

Well, I'm a bit puzzled as to whether I should forage at all... There are some mushrooms growing near my house that seem to be horse mushrooms. I've checked with a good guide and they don't look like any of the poisonous species horse mushrooms can be confused with. They've also got the distin...

Re: leather viking shoes ;)

They look amazingly similar to 'ghillie' shoes (worn for traditional Scottish and Irish dancing). Although ghillies have a separate stitched-on sole and use fabric shoelaces, they do up the same way and are amazingly light and supple - they just shape themselves to your feet. The ancestry is there f...

Re: lay a path?

Might get a bit chilly - you can wait a long time, sometimes, before you meet the people on the next plot. Thanks everyone for your useful suggestions. I'm thinking it over now, weighing up the pros and cons of keeping on the lotty vs leaving it and putting a big push into getting a house with a dec...

That would be nice! I'll have to meet them and try to establish diplomatic relations first, but it would be to their advantage too.

Re: lay a path?

If it doesnt have to be pretty you might just go to your local carpet shop and ask for the old stuff they rip out of peoples' houses before they put down new. Keeps the weeds down, holds the ground together and can look pretty [ok I lay mine face down] oh and it is free ! Also a possibility, thank ...

Re: lay a path?

I've got some of this: http://www.primrose.co.uk/instant-garden-track-chevron-roll-out-path-single-width-p-38486.html?source=googleads&gclid=CJK9rrygm64CFQcRfAodBQllKg Which does the job nicely. The beauty of it is that you can either peg it down in place or take it up and put it away when you'...

lay a path?

This isn't just any path, this is a nightmare path : on my small allotment, with a metal dividing fence on one side and my beds on the other. The path is uneven clay ground, very compacted, with the odd ant hill. So far I've focussed my efforts on the beds and just pootled around with the path, trimm...

Re: I went out faraging, apparently I am not normal

Forgot to mention the best comment I ever had was from an old woman that actually crossed the road to talk to me: "I get awfully concerned whenever I walk this road as there's so many of those here and it would be very distressing to see a child getting poisoned." I showed her the carrier...

Re: survive on a very tight budget

Did anyone answer the question about dhal? It's lentils cooked with spices. The suggestions about soup are good ones and you can make soup from practically anything - gently fry some onions (or leeks or garlic, basically something oniony) for the base, add water and your other veg plus some Marigold...

I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed so I won't comlain too much, gives my body a chance to do it's healing but still...does anyone get like this? Every once in a while I'll do...

marking posts as read

How do I undo the 'mark posts as read' button? I clicked it thinking it was giving me a customised choice, and it's marked everything as read (I think - I'm not totally up to speed with the symbols used for the boards yet).

Re: elderflower crawling with minuscule bugs!

I've got a few this year (they are crawling round the kitchen windowsill having found some fruity brew there, but they can't get into the bottle). I usually give the elderflowers a good bash/shake before putting them into the plastic bag, so most of the wildlife doesn't come home with me - saves tim...
