Re: Potatoes

Should I be thinking about starting to dig these up now maybe? I was hoping I could at least have new potatoes before the wireworm set in?

Re: Potatoes

Ay up, thanks for the advice!

They were actually in the potatoes themselves, not the leaves. It was like they'd burrowed in there to nest or something, 'orrible little boggers.

Potatoes

Hi, I dug over a patch of grass into a vegetable plot last year. I planted spuds in it, and they ended up infested with red looking slug things. Somebody on here advised me that this happens in land taken from grass. Now, I planted some cabbage in there this year, but that cats wrecked them. However...

Re: Raw Choc Tart

So, dates are just a dried really sweet fruit? So, maybe dried strawberries, and blend with hazelnuts and sea salt for the base?

Re: sauerkraut

I just bung a any left over cabbage in a glass jar with a lid, it's full of salt water. Seems to work, although I might just be eating salty cabbage for all I know.

Raw Choc Tart

Anyone else see this on River Cottage? Seems a nice idea, but it's full of weird sounding hipster ingredients from the four corners of the world. Shocking food miles, nothing local or in season. I'm wondering, can we come up with replacements for all these no doubt needlessly exotic ingredients? I'd...

Tea and Black Pepper

Mornin',

Anyone know a a (preferably England based) seeds web site that can sell me tea and black pepper seeds? I think these'd be fun to try in the greenhouse once I've built it.

Re: Greenhouse Base

Well, I finally started on this yesterday. I'm going to pull up the wooden frame that's too small. I skimmed off the stones that are in the frame, and there was rubble under it. I've piled the rubble up and away from the back edges. I'm going to get a load of breeze blocks and sand, and lay them alo...

Re: Greenhouse Base

I probably didn't explain very well. There's a wooden frame that's set a few inches into the floor, the inside of that is filled with stones. The last owners had a shed on it. My new greenhouse is a metal frame with proper glass. Its got a metal frame/base which it needs to be built in. I can extend...

Greenhouse Base

Ay up, I've got a greenhouse off evilBay, and the previous owner at the house has put a grave base in one corner with a wooden 6-7 inch deep frame set into the ground around it. Is this a suitable base for a green house? They had a shed on it before. I'm not sure if it'd be better with the greenhous...

Re: Weeding

Well, there's a tub of what I hope are weeds outside now, and a load of mud with them. Can I put that in the compost bin or is there more to getting rid of the weeds and roots?

Hmm, number 4 didn't smell of curry, so it must be lavender, it smelled kind of nice like that.

Re: Weeding

Thanks for the advice so far. Bad to hear weeding is an all year round job, but such is life! :D I did post before, and somebody said to leave the veg patch and just see what grows there, but to be honest, I do like the idea of actually doing it myself so I know what's in there for sure. I think som...

Weeding

So, I have a vegetable patch that I the last owners of this house had made. I got a few spuds out of it in winter, but most of them had gone 'orrible. I've no idea what else is in there. I can see there's some grass starting to grow in places though, and those weeds that look a bit like small doc le...

Re: New to Veg Growing, but Groundwork Layed

I had the good cabbage when I moved in. I followed what you said and dug up the spuds. There were actually one or two good 'uns in there, so I've bagged them. So, should I leave the mankey spuds in the earth or put them in the compost bin? Will they grow back next year if I leave them and the roots ...
