Re: Horse manure central heating!

How many times in a year are you going to have to replace the manure? I have no idea having never tried this before. :dontknow:  If you build a muck heap ( and I should point out I actually do mean a muck heap, not a heap of muck - there's a vast difference) then, when it gets to a cer...

Re: ARRRGH Children please please give me advice!

Oh goodness, bedtimes!!! Non existent in our household! They go to bed with us, what ever time that may be - shock horror - sometimes as late as midnight (*whispers* or later) and get up when they are ready. One of the (smaller) reasons we went down the home ed route was so that we could continue wi...

Re: Horse manure central heating!

As far as I know (and I have absolutely no scientific back ground, only 30 odd years of building muckheaps) moisture is needed for the fermentation process. So I'm guessing that if I heap this in the bunker as I plan, then with a lid on to try and keep more heat in, but which would then prevent the ...

Re: ARRRGH Children please please give me advice!

Certainly being one step ahead and heading things off before they have chance to become an issuse works for us. Come rain or shine, if I can feel things are going to escalate, we go out for a walk. All of us come back in a better frame of mind and without the stress. No, most definately means no in ...

Re: Horse manure central heating!

Thank you, I read about that too. Thought phase 2 might be to "brick" it and dry it and burn it :0) Watch this space....!

Edited to add, the only drawback I can see with this, is the space you'd need (presumably) undercover to dry it out.

Re: Horse manure central heating!

I just googled "compost heating house" and it threw up a few articles (and quite few red herrings of course!) some of which mentioned leaves and chicken poo amongst other things :0) I have also now been looking at woodchips too (again I have access to a free and never ending supply), and t...

Re: Horse manure central heating!

Well, what do you know?! Seems as if I'm not the first (or Giggles for that matter). Found a fab couple of sites, giving ideas of dimensions and methods of coiling the pipe etc ....and...da da da da da da daaaaaa....how to stop the heat being taken out of the pile at such a rate as to halt decomposi...

Re: Horse manure central heating!

Lol! I love my horses, but I don't want to be *that* close to them! I'm not sure (tho probably being completely blond here) what the effect of the amount of heat "given off" will have to do with my running the pipes through it? I can stand on the top of the heap and it feels quite cool, bu...

Re: Horse manure central heating!

Thanks for all your replies guys, much appreciated. The I'm told from several sources that the boiler needs to be set at this temp, cant remember exctly why, but it was to do with the system that is in here at the moment and it causing the componants to rust if its not. Mine is not to wonder why, I'...

Re: Horse manure central heating!

Yes, that's my concern. I am thinking of setting it up onto a gravity fed radiator in the tack room to give it a try and also setting up in the bunker, filling the pipe and seeing what temps come out. But I know I won't get a true picture here, because if the mains water is flushing through the pipe...

Re: Horse manure central heating!

Put crudely, a muck heap in our coal bunker behind the house and run pipes through it. Valve it off from the boiler system, so that we can isolate the muckheap and the boiler and swap between them manually if need be. So instead of the system running through the boiler, its by-passing it and picking...

Re: Horse manure central heating!

Many thanks for that, Ill look for it when I have five.

BTW, do you mind me asking why you wouldn't like to try it? Because it doesn't float your boat, or have you thought of something that I have missed?

Cheers

Annette
