Swiss chard gratin

For all the Swiss chard fans... I found this recipe on the French website Marmiton and made it last week. It was even better than my grandma's. shhh don't tell her though... - Swiss chard (enough for your oven dish) - 1-2 garlic cloves, chopped - 1-2 tbsp chopped parsley - a glass of milk - a piece ...

Re: planning help... pretty please...

Thank you guys, always very helpful! The magnolia is definitely going next winter. It's not very pretty and it's so close to the shed we keep having to chop branches to get in. It will be replaced (further from the path!) by a quince "vranja" which gets to 3.5-4m max I've been told. I'm no...

planning help... pretty please...

Hi everyone, sorry to bother you again with my garden... After a year and a half of digging grass and playing with veg & flowers, I think it's time to look at fruit trees and bushes. I'm not ready to plant it all out (way too much grass and ground elder not helping in places) but I don't want to...

Re: catch crop backfiring... help!

thanks Lyn. live and learn...
I'll sort it out this weekend. Getting ready to go to Gardeners World live in Birmingham (there is a new kitchen/edible gardens area), with a 10 month old little one, it's an expedition!

catch crop backfiring... help!

When I planted my potatoes, I thought I would sow some salad as a catch crop (like it said in the books :? ) Everything was looking good and I got a few salad leaves... then I went away... I now have a jungle of leaves, potatoes needing earthing up and I have no idea what to do with that mess! Do I ...

Re: Best garden veg

if you can get books out of your library I would suggest Geoff Hamilton's "ornamental kitchen garden" (the series is also in the dvd box-set), Joy Larkcom's "creative vegetable gardening" and Alys Fowler's "edible garden". More than what to grow, I find that the challen...

Re: Mint Wanted

I've got Moroccan mint, variegated pineapple mint, peppermint, chocolate peppermint and spearmint (well that's what was on all the labels :p ) You're welcome to some roots but I'm afraid I've got a couple of newby/stupid questions first: can I take cuttings now (I was planning on giving them bigger ...

Re: Green garden waste collections

we've got a blue week - green week system here. blue: paper-cardboard in a bag, recycling box with tin-bottles, clothes and shoes bagged separately. green: plastics in a bag, garden waste in big bags (up to 4). kitchen waste is not collected at all. interesting to read how it's done in other places....

Re: Too late to save my beetroot?

I haven't tried it myself but I've read in several books that if they've gone woody, you can leave them in the ground to harvest fresh leaves in the spring. Anybody has tried it? Is it worth it or better to pull them out and move on?

Another newbie question, I haven't touched the bronze fennel and it's still standing, all alone in the bed... do I have to cut it back before next spring?

Re: Gift Ideas

Same here! Sisters didn't moan though when they got their hand knitted hats: cashmere-merino-silk blend... yeah, wouldn't complain either :p Some people just don't "get it". For them, spending money is a way to show how much they care and therefore a handmade gift looks like trying to save...

What now?

I planted 2 rhubarb crowns, one blackcurrant, redcurrant and gooseberry bushes last winter and followed the pruning guidlines at planting time. So far this year, I've cleared the last leaves on the rhubarb and slightly cut back the drooping branches of the gooseberry that were almost touching the gr...
