Re: Chickens not laying

Most of my chickens haven't laid until about 4 months of age, some later but it does depend on how much light they get. You could add a light in the coop to extend the daylight hours for them.

Wow! Too bad they weren't sponge gourds. I have no idea what you could do with a goard like that. :dontknow:

Interesting! I didn't know you could boil the green tops in with the bottoms. Not that root vegetables even grow in my garden :(

Re: Winter dinners are here again

I was very interested to read what you all like to eat. When I moved here to GA from the north I had to get used to a different types of food offered in the south (it was the first time I ever saw chickens feet sold in stores--and no, I have never tried them yet). Pork roast is on sale here all the ...

Halloween jar

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii121/becky3086/Halloweenjar.jpg I made this today from a pickle jar. It is nothing but orange acrylic paint sponged on the outside of the glass then an empty spool of thread glued on the top and the top and spool painted black. I painted the face and put a string...

Re: muscovy

I have just one muscovy hen and she is my favorite. I have never had her be aggressive but she does like to give me a hard time now and then when I herd the others back into the pen, she is good at getting away.

Re: Scraps for chickens...

I have always given mine scraps though they don't get a lot of them (because I am lazy and don't want to walk out there.). They do get grass clippings when we cut the grass though.

Re: cut down supermarket trips ?

I once thought that I did not have enough money to stock up on food but I have recently found that that isn't the case. I started just buying something like a bag of flour each week since I don't usually have to buy a bag every week, I eventually got quite a bit stocked (for the person who asked abo...

Re: Banish Plastic

I think sometimes that people don't realize what it actually takes to make things these days. How many trees and how much energy do you think it takes to make a bunch of paper bags, or paper to wrap things in? How much energy do you think it takes to make a bolt of cotton cloth? Unless you are makin...

Re: In what way are you naughty?

Humm, not sure you all are going to like me at all. Your "naughties" seem kind of tame to me, lol. 1)We buy local if there is anything local to buy but I am sure a lot of the stuff that I buy doesn't even come from the US. 2)I use styraphome plates and paper towels. It is just so much easi...

Re: how much chicken poo to expect and what to do?

My compost pile is by the garden. I add to it throughout the year but most of it is from the chickens and then the next spring it goes into the garden.

Re: Recycling Ideas ?

Let's see, we recycle quite a bit here because I just can't stand to see things go to waste. I have used several different things to plant in here. Raised beds and containers are better with our poor soil so finding free things to plant in is better as well. I used tires for a little while but it is...

Re: what are you harvesting?

We have such poor soil here anyway that it is hard to get things to grow. I usually do quite well with beans, tomatoes and peppers but apparently my soil is lacking in something these last few years, the beans still grow but the peppers and tomatoes don't grow well but don't produce. We don't have a...
