Re: ...catch an adder
Somewhere in circulation(think I saw it about 30 yrs ago) there's an old photo of the last adder catcher in the New Forest.I reckon it was taken about 100 yrs ago there's a wizened old bloke outside a an old wooden hovel surrounded by hundreds of adders all strung up....pretty sure they had a price ...

Re: Duke of Edinburgh bronze award
What a pleasant story, didn't realise they still did the DoE. When i was 15(ish) I got a scholarship trip on the STS Winston Churchill, cruising round the Atlantic for a week or two, running up rigging, getting drunk in Cork, etc.My end report, compiled by some retired Army type described me as..'Good at...

Re: Cordon fruit trees
Another good tip,and the last one(promise), and you may well do it anyhow, keep a watering can/bucket full of water out with ,your trees. If there's a late frost fill sprayer(little indoor job will do) with said water first thing in the morning and spray on frosted blossom/tender buds. For some reason(...

Re: Cordon fruit trees
If they're maidens, best not'overpot' them, better they establish a decent root system in say a 5 litre pot, that way you'll have a decent rootball that doesn't fall apart on you when you eventually plant them next back end, especially as they'll be at an angle.I'm sure long run they'll benefit from you...

Re: Bird song
... and their meanings From a very early age I was told that the Yellow Hammer sings "A little bit of bread and no cheese" and the Wood Pigeon sings "Sow some more peas you fool, you old fool" and the Cuckoo sings, er well I forget that one. But a friend told me recently that th...

Re: Tree Guards.
Definitely,if you're AWARE of rabbits(i.e.you see them regularly)there will be enough to give them a good going over come a tough winter /spring.The little varmints are what make tree planting schemes so expensive, annoying when the willow itself is so cheap. If your going for a windbreak, think about ...

Re: solar-powered irrigation in a polytunnel
Yep thy weren't cheap, can't remember but Mrs OJ says I paid 30 quid for them, and I usually err on the low side when I tell her how much I've spent,so at least 60. can see how the tube would be much better on a window sill, and easier to raise if growing tom/pepper/etc plants.these work really well f...

Re: solar-powered irrigation in a polytunnel
Don't grolux create heat,Tony?, these things I've got(whatever they ) are always cool,so (presumably) don't use so much power? Later on I'll try and remember the site I got them from. Off the point but it might be relevant.

Re: Have I cocked my fruit trees?
Right ,forget all that crap,I've checked and you've got nothing but spur bearing varieties.So... Leave it all now 'till late November. Then (and this is only what I'D do,I've grown a fair few apples, just planted 20 in cordons, but every one has their own road to hell....) I'd lose the lowest 3 ,4,or ...
