Re: ...move to Orkney?
Sorry for hijackign but the thought of mving somewhere remote and more self sufficient keeps returning me so often that I had to read this thread. The cottage and workshope sounds intriguing. Can you be so kind as to give me some more information please?

Re: Any home edders out there?
If you want to can you take a "holiday" from school and trial run home ed for a week. Your not makeing an official decision and you can seee the pros and cons first hand without any committment? We did this and we were convinced after the week. Make sure you have planned the week with acti...

Re: Any home edders out there?
As new he'ers we are really enjoying it so far. Dads first day in charge didnt go so well but on the whole the kids have been great and we feel we have been coping well. We have had a few of the gossip and bad comments but on the whole we have been suprised by how unbothered most people have been. I...

Re: I went out faraging, apparently I am not normal
Unfortunately the crop this year was not as good so we didnt manage to forage them in time. My step mum (59) has such bad memories of the syrup that she wouldnt even try it. But, my family love rosh hip syrup, jam, wine and cordial. The rose hips in question were from a cultivated variety so they we...

fit an inset stove
We finally purchased an inset multi-fuel stove for our front room. We opted for a modern inset design that will be placed about 1/2 a foot above ground level. We have almost finished opening the original fire place ready. We have read a few guides about how to line the chimney but was wondering if a...

Re: Sling goodness!
I started bw with my 4th. Decided on it after we started living an ish life shortly before babe was born. Didnt want to spend on a double pushchair for only a few months. So started bw'ing. I am strggling a little bit at the moment tbh. He is still really small only 17lbs at 14months old and has to ...

Re: I went out faraging, apparently I am not normal
Forgot to mention the best comment I ever had was from an old woman that actually crossed the road to talk to me: "I get awfully concerned whenever I walk this road as there's so many of those here and it would be very distressing to see a child getting poisoned." I showed her the carrier ...

Re: picking rosehips?
I have only ever made rose hip syrup pre frost so I cant comment on the difference in flavour. I will happily say that I dont experience any bitterness. We are almost at the end of teh rose hips here so I dont really have the opportuntiy to wait!

Re: I went out faraging, apparently I am not normal
My children love foraging and are aware that there are some people that have "issues" with us strange folk. However, my children also know that the beef in their lasagne was grazing in the field opposite our house. That the fluffy sheep that reside in the field behind us are their favourit...

Re: wood burning stove
thanks again for the tips. And if teh offer of a nose cone still stands I would be delighted to give it a new home. Let me know if you want anything for it, I dont mind paying. I am hoping because the stove is such a great one that we can control the kw. I only want it because it looks so good! I wi...
