Re: BBC 1970's Saxon? Documentary

There was a recent remake, which was largely spoiled by one selfish couple whose only interest seemed to be stirring up dissent and unpleasantness, before buggering off early. Great pity.

Re: Quittin' Smoking

I have to completely disagree with you on all points there, KK. I cut down gradually over a period of several months using NRT (gum and microtabs). By the time I was ready to actually give up, it was easy, and I've been able to have the odd one every now and then without any problem or any desire t...

Re: Quittin' Smoking

This is a bit late in the day, but my advice, as an ex-smoker for the last 20 years, is: Give up all at once. Cutting down is no use: you're just putting off the decision. Have your last cig. last thing at night, That way, next day you've already gone six-to-eight hours without, without even trying!...

Re: worst five things on telly

I got rid of the telly about twenty years ago and what I saw on a recent trip to my daughters has only confirmed that for us this was the right thing to do ...............also the amount of channels and programs she has to pick from were just too much trouble to think about so it's back to the book...

Re: worst five things on telly

Is that the new John Lewis one, I thought it was a Billy Joel song? Anyway it nearly sent me to sleep! Yes, it is a Joel song, but I believe that the advert uses a new recording of it by the Guillemots. Obviously the advert doesn't have the same effect on everyone! I also rather like the new Vodaph...

Re: what are you harvesting?

Harvested my first three toms the other day: one smallish 'purple Ukrain', and two 'Tigerella'. Some of my plants have got blight, but it hasn't reached the fruit yet, and I think I've stopped it in its tracks for now with a heavy spraying with Bordeaux mixture. Hopefully, I can harvest all the tom...

Re: tomatoes at last?

I got the first signs of blight months ago. I immediately sprayed all the plants (and the spuds) heavily with Bordeaux mixture, and gave the blight enough of a check to ripen quite a lot of toms before it returned. The toms in the greenhouse escaped blight until recently, but finally succombed, but ...

Re: Changing the clocks would reduce carbon emmisions

Come to think of it, we don't need to change the clocks across the board anyway: individual employers, schools, etc. could change their times of attendance for their employees, pupils, etc. by an hour, if a majority of them wanted it. In fact, with flexible working nowadays common, individuals could...

Re: Changing the clocks would reduce carbon emmisions

Got sent this from the telegraph. Every few years, we get some over-qualified bongo-brain form some university or other proposing this, and claiming it would reduce accidents, make us healthier, and probably provide a cure for the common cold as well, but it's nonsense. Some of us are old enough to...

Re: Tea News...

Off topic a bit but some time ago we discovered that most tea bags are put together with polypropylene glue and as I don't like the sound of that have gone back to loose tea..........side benefit I had forgotten how much better it tastes.Jessica Not only does it taste better, and is more compostibl...

Re: Watering, how are you managing with no rain?

I managed with watering can alone until recently, but it's hard work and time-consuming to get enough water on the beds that way, and less than enough water does more harm than good, according to the books, as it encourages shallow rooting. The problem was that I don't have an outdoor threaded tap (...

Re: what are you harvesting?

...my french beans (Cherokee trail of tears, Soldier, and Borlotto lingua di fuoco) are coming on-stream. I don't think I'll grow 'Soldier' beans again. They grow quite large, compared with the 'Cherokee' beans, but they're not as nice, being a bit stringy and tough. The Cherokees, by contrast, are...

Re: what are you harvesting?

I've got loadsa kale (Sutherland), and my french beans (Cherokee trail of tears, Soldier, and Borlotto lingua di fuoco) are coming on-stream. I've got two small green plums (oo-er missus) on my tomato plants.
