Re: Elderberry wine
We usually use scissors method for elderflower wine but use a trusty fork for strigging (love that word-cheers MKG)the elderberries.Don't know about 2009 though,am merrily trying to drink this years before it goes into the bottle for Christmas this year.We haven't put in ginger and cloves yet,but wi...

Re: what to do with wild pears?
Don't know about perry(I think stripey pixie socks is probably right about the cider recipe) but we have made this, and it's possible without a fruit press!!! 5lb pears 1gallon water 3lb white sugar 2 lemons tsp yeast Do not peel or core pears, chop up being careful to save juice.Put into pan and add ...

Re: Socks (Knitting)
If you're aiming for 100% authenticity, have you found evidence for knitted socks in period(please,please,please-am sick of cold wet feet) .The earliest we've ever found is a surviving pair(with knitted vest)for a small child, dating from the 16th century in (I think ) the museum of London. All the woo...

Re: Flour making
Don't even start me on that!!Our re-enactment group have a small ceramic bread oven and watching the public trying to get their heads around how that works is almost as funny as watching them try and get their heads round cooking on an open fire.common reaction"are you going to eat that?"-...

suet assistance
We have been lucky enough to have been given a huge(most of a cows worth) and now have the dilemma of how to store it.Does it freeze-and if so grated or whole;is it fine in the fridge;does it need drying or do we have to live on suet pudding and spotted dick for the next two months. As an aside,we w...

Re: Flour making
Thanks for the welcome, all Ref the small mill-we bake a loaf of bread pretty much every day and quarter of an hour to grind the flour is nothing when you're saving a pound a kilo(if that makes sense) and wheat is easier to store than flour in any kind of bulk.Plus, this year,it's a bit of an experim...

Re: Flour making
I have had to register, because my OH is c**p at posting!!!We have sourced wheat at 10p a kilo (kind local farmer)and have also sourced a hand mill(no electricity or overheating)for £50 delivered and will post a link as soon as I find the invoice. Saying that,it does grind 1lb flour(enough for a loaf...
