moving to Wiltshire

Hi Folks, My partner and I are planning to move to Wiltshire next year. Ideally we would like to rent a smallholding but we're thinking that's going to be pretty hard to find so it looks like what we will probably do is rent a house and some land separately or just go with an allotment. We don't kno...

what can I do now?

Hello there! I kind of missed the boat on veg growing this year as we thought we might have to move so I was loathed to start loads of work for no return. In the end we have stayed put and I have no veg. I'm pretty muich a complete novice when it comes to this so I want to get it all right for next ...

Re: Hello from Surrey!

Hello to everyone!! Everyone's so nice here! and in answer to the question I'm into alternative therapies, cooking (big style!), homemade cosmetics, starting out with growing veg side of things more established as a forager, walking, horse riding (when I can afford it), reading, paganism and a littl...

Re: me being lazy= dodgy herbs

I know about the sweet rocket, I got loads of leaves from it in the spring, tasty in sandwiches and salads! My other half prefers it to the normal stuff.

I am loathed to plant anything out in in borders though as we are renting :( so if we move I'd like to able to take everything with me.

Re: me being lazy= dodgy herbs

No I haven't fed them at all, not sure what the best thing to use would be? And they don't seem to be overcrowded, its quite a big trough and quite small plants, but if I'm going to pull up the rocket that would give everything else more room. (lacking in pots at the moment, and lacking in money to ...

storing the seasonal glut

Hi Folks, I'm going to go berrying this eve (if the rain holds off) and would like some advice on storage. I know traditionally its all jams, jellies, chutneys and wine but I was wondering how well brambles and elderberries would freeze? And what would be the best use for them once they have been fr...

me being lazy= dodgy herbs

Hi folks, Time to admit that I am a bit lazy and due to my lazyness my herbs are looking particularly crappy. Early in the spring I bought some small herb plants (catmint, lemon thyme, thyme, oregano, marjoram, chamomile and also sweet rocket) and planted them in a nice trough, I also planted out a ...

Hello from Surrey!

An official 'hello' from me! I live in the Surrey hills area (renting so no I'm not rich!) and have been thinking about doing the self sufficiency thing for years. I moved away from Surbiton (I know, the irony!) to the countryside last year and have made some fairly pathetic attempts to gr...

starting on the road to self suffientish-ism

Hello all! I have recently decided to stop just thinking about becoming self sufficient and actually do something about it. One of the things on my list is to get chickens, however, I have two young cats (less than a year old) and am concerned that chickens and cats will not mix well. Is it just a b...
