Re: my greenhouse died :(

Yes, anchor it down. Lengths of angle iron or dexion hammered down into the ground at the corners is a common way of doing it & works well. FWIW you're not the only one, I've seen a few that blew away. Even if it's one with guy lines, they can't take the wind like a proper one. I got mine (alumi...

Yes, the seeds are fussy. My first packet all died, only 6 of the second packet survived & are now looking quite strong.

Re: strawberry seeds

I grew mignonette strawberries from seed. No, they're not as big but the season is much longer. I still have a few but prefer the yield from domesticated ones.

I grew some F1 seeds too. The 6 that survived are in the greenhouse & looking good to fruit this year.

Re: If you show me yours...

The (free but very small) greenhouse is now glazed & full of seedlings. Some areas are still not properly dug over as building the fruit cage & planting trees took priority. The pile of rescued timber/pallets needs to get used up so I can dig that bit. I'll probably plant spuds underneath it...

Re: If you show me yours...

Photos from year 1.

It's only a 5 rod plot & I've no chance of another one, even tho' there are loads which aren't kept up.

Re: Petition for more allotments - please sign up

It would help if the ones we had were managed properly...

I've signed up anyway, if the council are to be believed there is a massive waiting list!

Re: should plot holders have more than 1 plot?

We have had people taking on plots and then not doing anything with them and after chasing them up find they nolonger want them and this is really frustrating. I got to the frustrated bit. Asking around the regulars or walking the site should give you an idea of any likely plots... Seriously, just ...

Re: should plot holders have more than 1 plot?

Well I started... I picked an overgrown plot. I took the top layer of grass off an area about 2*2M. I turned it over & picked out the worst of the weeds. I dug 4 trenches. I placed carpet over it with bricks (from the 'skip' pile). I planted 25 (half) seed potatoes, with a little compost little ...

Re: YOUR FREEDOMS ARE BEING ERODED (it wasn't on the news today)

The best article I've seen since the demo: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/10/22/bondage_protest/ It goes into a bit more detail about the background. There are wider issues about privacy, censorship & freedom of speech as well as the potential to be discriminated against at work. Considerably...

YOUR FREEDOMS ARE BEING ERODED (it wasn't on the news today)

I don't want to upset anyone by posting this here but it's something which has the potential to affect a lot of people with a lot of different backgrounds. If you're not interested in personal freedom or politics, you can stop reading now. It's not the sort of subject this site is about at all... BU...

Re: should plot holders have more than 1 plot?

Perhaps it could work like this... If after 2 years (for instance), your plot is well kept & productive you could "earn" the right to a second plot...? I wouldn't want to move from mine to get a bigger one, (not that there are any) as I've built a substantial fruit cage & planted a...

Re: should plot holders have more than 1 plot?

I think it depends how big they are... When I first went on the waiting list for an allotment I was told that there was a choice between a 10 rod plot or a 5 rod plot. When, 2 years or so later I was eventually offered a plot they had all become 5 rod plots (any large ones being cut in half if they ...
