Re: Weather forecast

Well I'm pleased that I held off starting my maincrop tomatoes. It looks like this cold weather is going to last for some time, and I would have had to put them in my large heated cloche affair, along with all the other tender stuff, like peppers and aubergines etc. It's quite big, but not that big....

I would guess it's Brown Turkey, that's the really old European variety ... in fact I think it was the ONLY European variety until fairly recently. I have one and your fruit looks just like mine in colour and size.

Re: Weather forecast

Yes, I have that problem too. Our own weather forecaster Met Éireann is fairly accurate, but they only do today and tomorrow and I like to have some idea of the week ahead. What is odd on my original post is that you have 2 professional companies giving 2 totally different forecasts for the same pla...

Re: It's that time of year again ...

As it appears I can't reliably post more than one photo until John fixes it, here is the 2nd photo.

If you look closely you can see a tiny flower truss starting to grow.
Hopefully these are going to be a nice early variety.

Re: It's that time of year again ...

Here's a photo of one of those 4 sprouted seeds.
They have been in my unheated potting shed since I moved them out of the propagator when they emerged from the compost.
I'm calling the variety "Caroline" after my daughter who almost certainly bought the original fruit.

Weather forecast

The weather forecast is quite important to us, especially at this time of year, but which one do you use? I used to use Metcheck but found that they almost always got the temperature wrong, especially overnight lows (too high). I have been using the BBC weather, but since the beginning of the month ...

Re: Bread flour question

I think that using the modern, gluten rich varieties of wheat is responsible for at least some of the large numbers of coeliacs that are being diagnosed these days... You could well be right Ina. It possibly doesn't help that "modern young" people are eating larger quantities of bread products, suc...

Re: Bread flour question

if the gas is not trapped then the bread simply does not rise Yes I understand that, but assuming the yeast is still pumping out CO2, where does the gas go? There are no holes in the dough surface to leak it out and no large hole in the middle. I could accept either of those, but I'm still mystifie...

Re: Bread flour question

The only reason for yeast to stop working is if it is starved or exhausted. In such a short process it's unlikely to starve, especially as you add honey to activate it (+ sugar in the recipe?). If there's too much sugar around the yeast will feast and then collapse, rather like me at Christmas, but...

Re: Bread flour question

certainly give it a first rise in the bowl then another proof in the tin/tray or whatever. No, I haven't done that for at least 25 years GA, I started doing it text book but did an experiment (again  ) by comparing bread that was proved twice against just the one rise. OK, it probably ...

Bread flour question

I know there is at least one member of this forum who knows more about bread making than I do. So, I have a weird problem that I can't work out the reason for. I have been making my own bread continuously since the mid '80s, so I've made quite a few loaves. I now make my bread with the help of our K...
