Re: Top 5 to grow on the Allotment to grow the most

Thanks for all the great ideas. Would love to hear ideas from 10-15 more people to make sure I take everything into consideration. It's fine if some items repeat or you'd like suggest especially tasty and productive varieties.

Top 5 to grow on the Allotment to grow the most

This year, I'd like to get as much food from the garden as possible without spending too much to produce it. I can get good compost, so that's no trouble. A couple friends suggested potatoes and greens as being key things to grow. I asked which greens were best to grow. One friend said whatever I li...

Re: 33p-50p per person Meals

Thanks for the variety of tasty suggestions. Large batch ideas or regular sized family ideas are both good as we can freeze some of the extra for a future meal—or just freeze the freezable foods. Economising is the goal. Lower priced meals are ok too, but we are trying to get as much nutrition in as...

Recipes for FAST days of FAST diet?

A friend is coming to visit who is doing the FAST diet. What are some good places to find recipes for the two low calorie days? I have turned up a couple of recipes, but due to other meanings of the word, I mostly turned up discussions about fast food places or recipes that can be made in 15-30 minu...

Trying any new vegetables or varieties this year?

Are you trying any new vegetables or varieties this year. Anything new you tried last year that you would like to recommend we try? I am hoping to try a pepper from a friend that is sweet yellow pepper and is shorter and wider than a banana pepper. Am learning about some more Asian type greens as we...

1.25 kg Mixed Vegs Bag for £1. What do you make with it?

At your local shop can you get the mixed bag of 1.25kg of fresh vegetables for £1? How do you cook them to best advantage?

33p-50p per person Meals

What meals can you make for under 33p or 50p a person?

What are the specially priced foods in your area that make it possible?

Re: Apple butter

It's very good on homemade bread too.

You can also follow the same recipe but with pears.

Frugal Recipes from A Girl Called Jack

Jack Monroe has been taking part in the Live Below the Line Challenge. For the past several years, she has needed to cook very frugally and has posted some frugal recipes to her blog. Generally the meals are under 50p per serving. Her 9p spiced bean burgers are a favorite. On the lower right side of...

Re: Vegetable Pate

The lentil and tomato one looks delicious. Will try that with some of the ripe summer tomatoes. Do canned Italian plum tomatoes work for the recipe too?

In addition to pates, recipes for bean spreads would be welcomed too.

Re: £1 a day per person for food

Here are the blogs and websites I have found so far. Central US and African (separate months for each) http://feeds.feedburner.com/Dollar-A-Day?format=xml and they now have a website where they do a different challenge each month. The end of the African challenge might be at the beginning of the web...

Re: SIMPLE COOKING

Stirfrys were invented to save fuel like this. Cut up everything first before turning on the gas. Serve over wholegrain noodles rather than brown rice to save fuel on that too. Or eat with wholemeal bread from the shops for no fuel for the grain. In the summer stirfry meat and serve on top of a sala...
